DAY 1
Ruth 1:16-18
But Ruth Replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if even death separates you and me”. When Naomi realized that Ruth was determined to go with her, she stopped urging her.
THOUGHT
Ruth was urged by Naomi, her mother-in-law, to go home to her biological family after the death of her husband. Tragedy had struck their family, and Naomi’s husband and her two sons had passed away. Both daughters-in-law were instructed to go home to their parents and their culture. Ruth was not raised to know God in her youth. She met God through her new family that she had married into. The reasonable choice would have been to go back home, where she would have the protection and care of her biological family. This meant that she would also need to give up her relationship with God, as her culture did not worship God. Despite the unknown and the challenges that lie ahead, she chose to stay with Naomi and God. God provided the women with the wisdom and strength needed for the time and provided a way for their care and future happiness.
Naomi must have illustrated God’s love in very real ways to her daughters-in-law. Ruth must have noticed that a life with God—through Naomi’s well-lived life—was much better regardless of life’s circumstances than a life without God. Naomi’s example to her growing family, after her sons married Ruth and Orpah, had a lasting impact on both the young women. Orpah wept before leaving Naomi to return to her family at Naomi’s repeated urging. Ruth made the unreasonable choice to stay with Naomi regardless of the urging and the unknown of what lies ahead.
ACTION
Trust God to provide for your needs and that he has a plan for your future happiness.
Remember that whatever God has in store for your future is infinitely better than what you could produce on your own.
Make your relationship with God a priority. Let others see His light and love through you.
PRAYER
God, you are my provider and comforter. Please help me to see and remember that what I have comes from you. When challenges come my way that threaten to distance me from you, please send people into my life who will help me to make the “unreasonable” choice in today’s culture and draw me closer to you. Help me show your love to others in my life so they can also make the “unreasonable” choice of living with you over the life they might have tried making for themselves without you. Thank you for your constant unconditional love and care. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
