Definition
- Sympathy: Recognizing someone's suffering and feeling concern for them.
Empathy: Seeking ot understand and share another person's emotional experience.
- Pity: Feeling sorrow for someone while viewing them from a position of distance or superiority.
- Compassion: Recognizing someone's suffering, being moved by it, and desiring to help relieve it.
- Sympathy Notices. Empathy understands. Pity looks down. Compassion Moves.

Discussion Questions

1. Where have you become so overwhelmed by the problems around you that you’ve stopped seeing the people in front of you?
2. Who or what has God brought close enough for you to notice, but you’ve been tempted to dismiss, avoid, or explain away?
3. When you see someone hurting, are you more likely to respond with compassion, judgment or distance, and what would it look like to see them the way Jesus sees them?
